Downloading and Printing Tips

Ordering
Having clicked on either the RailscenesTownscenes or Scratchbuilder's Yard sections of the site, you can simply click on the product that you are interested in and this will then take you to the kit product page.
  1. Click on the Scale and Texture buttons you require
  2. Click ‘Add to cart’ and ‘Proceed to Checkout’
  3. Simply enter your name and email address (these details won’t ever be shared).
  4. Click ‘Proceed to PayPal’ and you will be taken to the Pay Pal checkout.
  5. The Pay Pal checkout allows you to pay using your PayPal account or click on ‘Pay with a credit or debit card’ and use your credit card.
  6. Once you have gone through the ordering process an email will be sent to you within a few minutes that will allow you to download your kits to your computer.
  7. If you don’t receive your email, check your spam or junk mail folder and add ‘sales@scalescenes.com' to your trusted addresses.
If you are experiencing problems with your order or with PayPal, please try using a different web browser, in most cases this fixes the issue. If you are using a debit or credit card you can’t use an email address or card number that belongs to an existing PayPal account. If you have a PayPal account, please log in. If you don’t, please change the email address or credit card number and try again. All payments are processed automatically via PayPal, which is a very secure and reputable payment service. Scalescenes does not retain or have access to your Pay Pal or credit card details. Regrettably we are unable to accept cheques or postal orders. For additional information check the FAQ page.
Downloading

To access the kit files, click on each link (blue text) within the download email. If your download email doesn't contain any links, please ensure that your email settings allow you to 'View as HTML'.

How the file is saved generally depends on the Web Browser that you are using:

Google Chrome
When you click on the link, the zip folder should automatically begin downloading to where your computer’s downloads are usually saved.

Internet Explorer
When you click on the link, a box will appear giving you the option of ‘Open’ or “Save’, Select ’Save’ and the zip folder should automatically begin downloading to where your computer’s downloads are usually stored.

Firefox
When you click on the link, a box will appear giving you the option of ‘Open with’ or “Save File’, Select ’Save FIle’ and the zip folder should automatically begin downloading to where your computer’s downloads are usually stored.

Safari
When you click on the link, the zip folder should automatically begin downloading to where your computer’s downloads are usually saved.

Please disable any download accelerator software you may have running as this has been known cause problems with zip folders.

Opening your download

Windows and Mac OS both have built-in support for extracting the ZIP folder you will download, you certainly don't need to buy Winzip or any other ZIP folder extraction tool. You should be able to simply click on the downloaded folders and open them up as you would any other folder.

Within the ZIP folder, the actual kits are saved as PDF files.

Smart phones and tablets

Unfortunately at this stage iPads, iPhones and some Android tablets and phones don't support zip folders. However this is easily fixed by downloading a free ZIP folder app:

Android tablets and smart phones

Apple iPads and iPhones

Or course you'll also need the Adobe Reader as well as access to an AirPrint enabled printer or printer app.

Opening your PDF file

Once you have opened the downloaded ZIP folder you’ll see your Scalescenes kits, instructions or sheets supplied as PDF (Portable Document Format) files. To read these PDF files correctly you must have Adobe Reader installed on your computer.

Adobe Reader is a free program and is available from:

Get_Adobe_Acrobat_Reader_DC_web_button_158x39.fw

Please also ensure that you are not attempting to open the downloaded ZIP folder from within Acrobat Reader, this will result in an error message. Try opening the ZIP folder in ‘File Explorer’ (Windows) or ‘Finder’ (MacOS), and then double clicking on the PDF files.

Printing paper options

A quality matt photo paper (90-120gsm) or similar is recommended if using an inkjet printer. Lighter weight paper makes the job of wrapping the ‘Cover Layers’ prints around the ‘Base Layers’ or corners lot easier. Of course if you have a colour laser printer then a good quality 80gsm copier paper will be fine.

Ensure that the paper hasn’t been affected by moisture, this can result in the prints taking on a green or purple hue, especially with inkjet printers.

Printer settings

Scalescenes kits and texture sheets have been designed to fit on to A4 (210x297mm) size paper.

If you are using an inkjet printer, the higher the quality (or ‘dpi’) the crisper the image will print. However higher quality prints use more ink, try printing just one page or our Test Print and check the results (you may actually be surprised that your printer's 'Standard' quality setting does the job).

The instructions can also be printed separately on a lower quality print setting on normal paper to save on consumables.

All colour printers produce a slightly different interpretation of the colours. Here are some things you can try if your print doesn’t look right:

  • Check the ink levels and ensure that the heads are clean and in alignment (most printers have a small 'utilities' window to deal with these issues, refer to the users guide).
  • Change the type of paper you are using (for example Matt photo inkjet paper tends to produce much richer colours than even the best copier type paper).
  • Ensure that the paper hasn’t been affected by moisture.
  • Make sure the paper type in your printer settings matches the type of paper you are using.
  • If your printer has the option, try changing its colour management settings (these are usually found in the options section of of your print window). Different settings can yield very different results on the same printer.
Can I still access my links from the old website?

Yes, simply replace the 'http://scalescenes.com' section of your link address with: http://216.92.198.30

For example:

http://scalescenes.com/download/k=865f9baf97102144f52b09fe

becomes

http://216.92.198.30/download/k=865f9baf97102144f52b09fe

Copy and paste the new link into the address bar at the top of Internet Explorer or another browser (not your browser's search field).
